US Justice Department Intervenes in Lawsuit to Halt California's New Electoral Map
The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
