Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
