EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
