RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
