The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and given more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

The legal document highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also requested that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.

The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the time, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
